A North Carolina Optometry Legacy: Rosenstein Vision

Rosenstein Vision is proud to say that our eye care services  have been truly family-owned and operated in Durham, NC since its origin in 1904 — our family heritage is what sets us apart.

The Rosenstein family has been in North Carolina optometry for more than 100 years — when Dr. Aaron Rosenstein’s great grandfather opened the practice in 1904. Since then, four Rosensteins have served in the optometric practice in the Raleigh-Durham area.

In 1904, Dr. Nathan Rosenstein relocated from New York to Durham, North Carolina, where he became the fourth individual licensed to practice optometry in the state. He served as president of both the North Carolina State Optometric Society and the Southern Council of Optometrists, which represented ten southeastern states. His original office was established at 213 West Main Street in Durham.

Dr. Abraham Rosenstein graduated from Trinity College (now Duke University) in 1921 and from Columbia University’s School of Optometry in 1923, subsequently joining his father’s practice that same year. He received the ninetieth optometry license issued by the State of North Carolina and practiced alongside his father at 213 West Main Street before their relocation to 323 West Main Street.

Following his studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, Dr. Robert N. Rosenstein completed his education at the New England College of Optometry in Boston. In 1974, he became the third generation of the Rosenstein family to practice optometry in Durham, obtaining License #888 in North Carolina. Dr. Robert Rosenstein has dedicated two decades as a member of the North Carolina State Board of Examiners in Optometry and has served on both the American Academy of Optometry admission committee and the Council on Optometric Practitioner Education (COPE). He was honored with the John D. Constabile Distinguished Service Award by the North Carolina State Optometric Society in June 2002 and the John D. Robinson Award for Clinical Excellence in 2013.

Dr. Aaron Rosenstein earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Guilford College in 2006 and a Doctorate of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 2011. As holder of the 2248th license to practice optometry in North Carolina, he represents the fourth generation of the Rosenstein family to provide eye care services to Durham and its surrounding communities through Rosenstein Vision.
